September 25, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), Jackie Speier (CA-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) introduced legislation calling for the Joint Committee on the Library to add a statue or bust of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the U.S. Capitol Building.

"Our Capitol stands not only as the heart of our government, but also as a monument to the achievements of our nation and a reflection of the nation we strive to be," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life's work embodied our nation's highest ideals through her relentless efforts as a litigator, advocate, and jurist committed to ensuring that the principle of equal justice under law applied to everyone. To recognize that legacy, it's fitting that we should honor Justice Ginsburg with a statute in the Capitol which will continue to inspire generations of visitors just as she inspired so many during her lifetime."

"Our nation lost a true icon of the women's rights movement, and an ardent defender of equality for all, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg," said Congresswoman Frankel. "She protected a woman's right to abortion and birth control, reforming how women are treated in courtrooms, boardrooms, schools and the military. Ginsburg's legacy will live on as an inspiration for generations, and it is fitting to honor her in the U.S. Capitol for her remarkable contributions to our nation."

"Never before has a woman or a Jew lain in State, and once again, even in passing, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is blazing new trails," said Congresswoman Schakowsky. "She spent her entire life fighting tirelessly to protect and advance the rights of women, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and voters. Because of her work and the movement she selflessly advanced, women like me, my daughters, and my granddaughters, are miles closer to achieving true equality."

"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be remembered for her contributions to the Supreme Court and devotion to the law as a catalyst for change," said House Administration Chairperson Lofgren. "Her legacy has touched our daily lives and shaped the ambitions of women, families, and all Americans for generations. Her historic opinions have given a voice to fairness and justice that is written into the law and stands as our strong legal precedent for gender equality. As Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on the Library and Chair of the House Fine Arts Board, I am pleased to be an original cosponsor of this legislation to commemorate her remarkable life and service by placing a statue of her in the U.S. Capitol Building."
