Ranking Members Krishnamoorthi and Raskin Lead 80 House Members In Urging Swift Nomination and Confirmation of Two Appointees for Postal Service’s Board of Governors

February 1, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, led 80 of their Democratic colleagues in urging President Joe Biden to quickly fill two open vacancies on the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) Board of Governors. The letter urges the Biden Administration to nominate two members who are committed to maintaining the USPS’s high service standards and lowering costs for consumers and businesses who utilize it.

“Millions depend on the Postal Service for the safe delivery of medication, Social Security checks, and personal correspondence” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. “Price hikes, including one that went into effect just days ago, are devastating to individuals and businesses that depend on reliable USPS service. President Biden has an exceptional opportunity to positively shape the future of this critical service for generations to come by swiftly appointing two new members to the Board of Governors who will prioritize public service and the longevity of the USPS. I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to ensure the protection and security of the Postal Service for all Americans.”

“The expiration of the terms of two members of the Board of Governors presents the Administration with a unique opportunity to ensure that the Postal Service has a vibrant future,” wrote the Members.  “Now more than ever, it is important that the Board of Governors have a full, diverse, and future-oriented Postal Board of Governors in place that will uphold its mission of public service.  In filling the Board vacancies, we urge you to nominate Postal Governor candidates who will hold leadership accountable and advocate strongly for the protection and expansion of Postal Service services—services that are essential to working class families and small businesses who depend on prompt, reliable, affordable delivery no matter their ZIP code.”

Under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, far too many Americans, including rural Americans, small businesses, seniors, and tribal communities, have experienced increased costs and diminishing service, harming those who depend on the USPS for both personal and business correspondence. In the four years under Postmaster General DeJoy, there have been five separate price hikes, including one that took effect just days ago. The USPS is responsible for delivering 421 million pieces of mail and 23 million packages across the country every single day, making it one of the largest delivery systems in the world.

The two new members of the USPS Board of Governors must be prioritize maintaining service levels, exploring new sources of revenue, and ensuring communities often underserved do not see their service levels drop, rather than continue price increases to “uncomfortable rates.”
