NEW: Congressman Krishnamoorthi To Bring Tireless Labor Champion Steve Powell of UFCW Local 881 to Trump’s Joint Congressional
Powell has been on the front lines of advocating for working families and fighting policies that increase the cost of groceries
WASHINGTON — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi announced Steve Powell, President of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 881, as his guest to Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress tomorrow night.
For years, Congressman Krishnamoorthi and Steve have worked together to fight corporate grocery store mergers that threaten to drive up grocery costs for working families and hurt the very workers who keep shelves stocked and families fed. At a time when the Trump Administration is paying for corporate tax cuts by gutting Medicaid and firing the workers who manage seniors’ Social Security benefits and veterans’ care, their partnership has never been more important.
“For forty years, Steve Powell has been a tireless advocate for Illinois’ working families, and I am proud to have him as my guest for tomorrow’s joint session of Congress,” said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. “Donald Trump owes Steve and every other hardworking American an explanation as to why he is cutting taxes for billionaires and corporations while hanging working families out to dry.”
“As Americans struggle with soaring grocery prices while facing uncertainty around food safety and availability, I’m proud to stand with Congressman Krishnamoorthi as he attacks the causes of this crisis with diligence and compassion,” said Steve Powell, President of Local 881 UFCW. “While the Trump Administration wastes valuable time on political theatre and old grievances, we’re grateful that we have champions like Raja working with us to get affordable, high-quality food onto our dinner tables.”
Elected as President of Local 881 in 2019, Steve also serves as Vice President on the UFCW International Executive Board. A longtime labor advocate, Steve began his career fighting for workers in 1985 as a Union Representative for Local 881 and has never looked back. Local 881 UFCW represents 34,000 members employed in retail food and drug stores throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana and is among the largest affiliates of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents 1.3 million members in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
