Important Childcare Funding To Be Included In Appropriations Package

September 28, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the House of Representatives passed legislation to fund the departments of Labor, Health, and Human Services, and Education for fiscal year 2019. This includes $250 million for early childhood programs and $5.3 billion to the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG). The CCDBG is the primary source of funding for child care support for working families, a longstanding priority for Congressman Krishnamoorthi. Today, only 11% of civilian workers in the United States receive childcare assistance from their employers. In an effort to fix that, Congressman Krishnamoorthi introduced H.R. 5401, the Child Care Responsible Employers, or Child CARE Act, which would require that when seeking federal contracts, companies who give on-site child care for their employees would be given a priority.

"Working families need options when it comes to taking care of their children," said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. "My wife and I have 3 children, and we know that raising a child is no easy task. I believe we have a duty to support working families – both in the workplace and at home. This is why I worked with colleagues in both parties to secure this additional funding for this vital program. I'm pleased that this bill furthers one of my key priorities, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to make affordable childcare a reality for every American."
