House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Unanimously Passes Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s Bipartisan Legislation to Level Playing Field for American Manufacturers of Compressed Gas Cylinders

February 26, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure passed Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s (D-IL) H.R. 1182, the Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety and Oversight Improvement Act, by unanimous voice vote. The legislation, introduced by Congressman Krishnamoorthi and Congressman Troy Balderson (R-OH), instructs the Transportation Secretary to enact regulations that ensure compressed gas cylinders produced by foreign manufacturers meet U.S. Department of Transportation safety standards and specifications.

“For too long, foreign manufacturers have been held to lower standards than those located in the United States, undercutting American companies, and exposing the public to potentially dangerous, fraudulent cannisters. As fraudulent cylinders from the People’s Republic of China and elsewhere continue to flood the market, our bipartisan legislation will ensure foreign manufacturers are held to the same standards of safety and quality as American producers. By instituting these reforms, we can protect the public from dangerous, inferior cylinders while ensuring American workers and companies can compete on a level playing field.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has been a vocal advocate for establishing an equal playing field for American and foreign manufacturers, particularly those looking to undercut U.S. manufacturers who play by the rules and undergo high safety standards on their products. The Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety and Oversight Improvement Act will be voted on by the entire House in the coming months.
