Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi on Summit with Kim Jong Un: “For The Second Time in a Week, President Trump Has Sided With a Dictator Against Our Allies”
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Krishnamoorthi released the following statement on President Trump’s recent summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un:
“I am very disappointed that President Trump decided to unilaterally end our military exercises with South Korea, apparently without seeking input from our allies or alerting them that this issue was even on the negotiating table. Meanwhile, the Kim regime has made no such promises regarding its million troops currently on the South Korean border or its numerous and well-documented human rights abuses. These actions come just days after President Trump alienated our NATO allies while attempting to internationally legitimize Vladimir Putin and his regime through its readmittance to the G-7. For the second time in a week, President Trump has sided with a dictator against our allies.
While every American and Korean can be happy that diplomacy carried the day and the summit did not end in acrimony, this agreement will need significant oversight from Congress as it’s implemented. I’m concerned that the White House was so desperate to get anything they could call a ‘deal’ that they were willing to give Kim Jong Un whatever he wanted in exchange for amorphous promises of future action. Without adhering to President Reagan’s doctrine of ‘trust, but verify,’ all we have done is hand the Kim regime a massive propaganda victory without any verifiable commitment to end its nuclear program.”
