Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Statement on Sears Filing for Bankruptcy
SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement in response to Sears Holdings' filing for bankruptcy today:
"The bankruptcy filing by Sears today adds uncertainty for its enormous workforce and its 132-year legacy as an American icon. This makes the occasion all the more painful as the company restructures. My focus is on its employees as they face an unknown future, and I know that this will be a painful time for many of my constituents. As the bankruptcy proceedings work through the court system, I urge all involved parties to prioritize the payments, pensions, and career opportunities for workers who have given their lives to a company that is synonymous with Chicago. This is also another example of how brick and mortar retailers are at a disadvantage compared to internet retailers. I'm a proud cosponsor of legislation that would help level the playing field, and I urge Congress to act to eliminate the uncertainty and make state collection of internet sales taxes as smooth as possible."
