Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s Help Students Vote Act Added To H.R.1, Passes House Administration Committee

February 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi yesterday announced crucial provisions from the Help Students Vote Act were added to the For the People Act (H.R. 1), a comprehensive reform bill to expand voting rights, reduce the influence of money in politics, and modernize our elections. This legislation passed the House Administration Committee yesterday and will soon be considered by the full House of Representatives.

"This is a monumental step forward for student voting," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "When students begin college each year, often having never voted or even registered to vote, they frequently lack the institutional support and resources to navigate the voting process. By adding provisions from the Help Students Vote Act, which I'm leading with Senator Cory Booker, to the For the People Act (H.R. 1), we are improving voter education and voter registration at every college campus across the country, which will strengthen the health of our democracy and ensure our government is more representative of the people it serves. I am eager to get this critical legislation through the House and signed into law, and I strongly urge my colleagues to support it."

Among numerous important provisions, the Help Students Vote Act enhances student civic participation by creating a Campus Vote Coordinator on each campus responsible for sending timely notifications with voter registration information before federal and state elections, and offers grants to institutions of higher education that sponsor nonpartisan voter education, registration, and mobilization efforts.
