Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: “Reopening The Government Is A Vital Step In The Right Direction, But We Need A Long-Term Solution”

January 26, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement regarding the bipartisan deal to reopen the federal government after a month-long shutdown:

"Reopening the government is a vital step in the right direction but we need a long-term solution. I'm pleased that we've finally reopened the government after these last 35 days, during which millions of American have gone without essential services and 800,000 federal workers have received paychecks of zero dollars and zero cents. This deal has granted these people the pay and services they have deserved since this shutdown began.

While this agreement is a move in the right direction—it only shows short-term progress. We cannot be worrying about funding the government every three weeks or treating shutdowns as an acceptable political tactic—we need a long-term plan to fund the government so that critically needed pay and services do not lapse again."
