Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Hails Chicago City Council’s Passage Of Ban On Flavored E-Cigarettes

September 9, 2020

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Following the Chicago City Council's overwhelming vote in favor of banning flavored e-cigarette sales within city limits, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi applauded local leaders for their decisive action to protect youth public health.

"I want to commend Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Alderman Matt O'Shea (19th Ward), and other leaders in the Chicago City Council who voted today to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes in the City of Chicago," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "According to the Centers for Disease Control, youth e-cigarette use doubled among high school students and tripled among middle school students between 2017 and 2019. Today, new studies on adolescent vaping show that e-cigarette users are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19 than non-vapers. Simply put, removing flavored e-cigarettes from the market will help keep these devices out of the hands of our children, which will have a lasting positive impact on public health."

As Chairman of the House Oversight Committee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Congressman Krishnamoorthi is leading congressional efforts to curb youth vaping. Recently, Congressman Krishnamoorthi's investigation compelled the FDA to crack down on companies illegally selling flavored disposable e-cigarettes, including Puff Bar- also known as the "JUUL 2.0." Last week, Congressman Krishnamoorthi partnered with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) in urging the CDC to update its school re-opening guidance to encourage colleges and universities to prohibit tobacco use on campuses across the country.
