Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: Chicago and Surrounding Communities Can’t “Sacrifice Real Police Reform for Jeff Sessions’ Idea of Law and Order”
SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement in response to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Session’s attempt to overturn a court order mandating reforms in Chicago’s police department:
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement that he plans to overturn this consent decree is not only disappointing, but disturbing. The agreed upon reforms, which would be independently monitored, would support community policing, prevent gun violence, and promote police accountability. The last thing the city of Chicago and surrounding communities need is to sacrifice real police reform for Jeff Sessions’ idea of law and order.
As a member of the House Oversight Committee, I plan to pursue a review of this and other actions taken by Attorney General Sessions to sabotage police reform. We need to let local authorities and reform advocates work together to solve the problems that plague the CPD without federal officials preventing such compromises. We have waited far too long to implement these reforms and, to use Attorney General Sessions’ own words, ‘the safety of Chicago depends on it.’ Attorney General Sessions must not hinder the efforts of those working to solve the problems that have endangered and taken too many lives in Chicago.”
