Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Challenges Census Bureau Claims of Population Declines in Suburban Chicago that Contradict Local Growth Data
SCHUAMBURG, IL – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi sent a letter to U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Santos and Population Division Chief Dr. Sandra Johnson expressing concern about the recently released Vintage 2023 data showing significant population declines in five communities across his district. The Villages of Rosemont, Streamwood, Elk Grove, Mount Prospect, and Palatine all experienced population losses greater than four percent, according to Census data. This number is in sharp contrast to conditions seen firsthand within these communities, including among local stakeholders, leaders, and residents. Given the Census Bureau’s previous estimates and following the 2020 Census where the Bureau grossly misrepresented Illinois’ population count by more than 46,000 residents, Congressman Krishnamoorthi is demanding further investigation into the released data. Misrepresentations of this kind can potentially cost local entities state representation at the federal level, as well as federal funding for services like public transit and healthcare.
“The nature of these errors carries far-reaching consequences, including the misallocation of representation and funding allocations throughout the state,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in the letter. “Without an accurate portrayal of our communities, federal funding for state and local programs are erroneously reduced. I urge you to address these reports with a thorough and public explanation of the methods used to collect this data, and to work with local leaders to expeditiously address concerns raised by the Vintage 2023 report.”
