Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Calls For A Full Counterintelligence Review Of Trump Team Meeting With Russian Agents Tied To The Kremlin
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Oversight Committee released the following statement in response to reports that Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner’s meeting with a Russian lawyer also included a former Soviet counterintelligence officer:
“There is a saying that there is no such thing as a former intelligence operative. President Trump’s top advisors put that to the test by meeting with a former Soviet intelligence officer and a Russian lawyer in their pursuit of dirt on Hillary Clinton.
Today we found out that the meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, Jared Kushner, and others, included Rinat Akhmetshin, a former Soviet counterintelligence officer who has been accused of cyber attacks and who Senator Chuck Grassley suspected of being an unregistered agent for Russian interests. The members of President Trump’s team scheduled and attended this meeting under the impression that they would be provided with material directly from the Kremlin.
This underscores my call for the FBI to conduct a full counterintelligence review of this meeting. When operatives at the highest levels of a presidential campaign, or a presidential administration, repeatedly fail to disclose sensitive meetings with Kremlin-connected individuals, we must ask: what are they trying to hide?
The Trump team’s meeting and failing to inform the proper authorities about it not only leads to questions as to why they failed to disclose it, but also makes the Trump team vulnerable to blackmail, extortion, and recruitment by foreign intelligence agencies.
This is why I called yesterday for a full counterintelligence review of this meeting and surrounding events, and why I’m renewing that call today.”
