Congressman Krishnamoorthi: “We Must Not Repeat The Mistake Of Confirming A Supreme Court Justice Without Properly Reviewing His Alleged Sexual Misconduct”

September 17, 2018

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to the Senate Judiciary Committee's scheduled vote on Thursday on Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court in the face of an accusation of sexual assault:

"The Senate Judiciary Committee must delay its vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination until after the Committee has reopened hearings to give a fair and full review to the accusation of sexual assault against Judge Kavanaugh. The accusation leveled by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford absolutely demands a hearing, and the American people demand one as well.

This is not the first time the Senate Judiciary Committee has had to confront accusations of sexual misconduct against a nominee to the Supreme Court and no one, regardless of party, should be satisfied with the manner in which Justice Thomas's hearings addressed the allegations against him. We must not repeat the mistake of confirming a Supreme Court Justice without properly reviewing his alleged sexual misconduct, and we must all demand a standard of treatment for Dr. Ford in bringing this allegation which Professor Anita Hill was shamefully denied. The accusation against Judge Kavanaugh should receive a full and fair hearing worthy of our country and its highest court."
