Congressman Krishnamoorthi Urges Chairmen Gowdy and Goodlatte to Investigate FBI Leaks to Rudy Giuliani During 2016 Election and Since

July 17, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy and Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte to convene hearings on FBI leaks to Rudy Giuliani during the 2016 presidential campaign and potentially since.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi's signed letter is viewable here and the text follows below.

July 13, 2018

The Honorable Trey Gowdy The Honorable Bob Goodlatte

Chairman Chairman

Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Committee on the Judiciary

2157 Rayburn House Office Building 2138 Rayburn House Office Building

Washington, D.C. 20515 Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Chairman Gowdy and Chairman Goodlatte

In a July 12 joint hearing before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, FBI Agent Peter Strzok expressed "a lot of concern" about potential "unauthorized disclosures" from FBI personnel to Rudy Guiliani:

Because while it is certainly possible that Mr. Giuliani is exaggerating or engaging in some sort of puffery, the reality is that also, given the things that were going on, giving the timing that the laptop was there and he was talking about that in the context that it was a big surprise, it caused me great concern that he had information about that. That he should not have had.

On October 25, then-Trump campaign advisor Rudy Giuliani promised "a pretty big surprise" coming up in the campaign. On Oct. 28, Giuliani claimed to be in contact with former agents and "a few active agents who obviously don't want to identify themselves." At the same time, New York investigators were aware of a warrant for Anthony Weiner's laptop that contained emails relevant to the investigation. According to Director Comey's alleged remarks to Attorney General Lynch, "there is a cadre of senior people in New York who have a deep and visceral hatred of Secretary Clinton."

According to the Justice Department Inspect General's report, the fear and indications of leaks coming out of the FBI may have affected the decision to make the reopening of the Clinton investigation public soon before the 2016 election.

While an unofficial campaign advisor receiving inside information on an ongoing criminal investigation is alarming enough, the possibility that no action has been taken to address leaks to Mr. Giuliani is a matter that demands Congressional oversight. As the head of President Trump's legal defense team, there are serious concerns that Mr. Giuliani may have contacts inside the FBI that could be an illicit source of information on the investigation into the President's former lawyer, Michael Cohen.

With Agent Strzok's testimony in mind, I respectfully request you to convene hearings to examine Mr. Giuliani's contacts with FBI officials to ascertain if there were any unauthorized disclosures in 2016 and if those leaks continue today.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Raja Krishnamoorthi

Member of Congress
