Congressman Krishnamoorthi Statement on GOP Proposal to Gut Medicaid
WASHINGTON — As House Republicans prepare to bring their irresponsible budget proposal — which includes up to an estimated $1 trillion in cuts that will gut Medicaid — to the House floor tomorrow, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement:
“It is unconscionable that Republicans would even suggest slashing Medicaid to give tax cuts to billionaires. As written, the GOP’s proposal would gut Medicaid and jeopardize the health care coverage of more than 850,000 Illinois residents. This is not hypothetical – we’re talking about seniors who will no longer be able to afford their nursing home care and parents who will no longer be able to treat their sick children. As such, I will be opposing the proposal and encouraging every Member who cares about the health and wellbeing of our state to do the same.”
As reported by Crain’s Chicago Business today, the GOP’s budget proposal could have devastating consequences for Illinois residents; including:
Risking cuts to the health care coverage of one in four Illinoisans — 3.6 million people
Kicking 862,774 Illinois residents off their health care coverage entirely
Endangering the health of the two out of every five infants born in Illinois and two out of every three nursing home residents — all of whom rely on Medicaid for care
Jeopardizing the solvency of clinics, hospitals, and other crucial care providers
