Congressman Krishnamoorthi Speaks Out Against Trump Administration Failure to Combat the Rising Price of Eggs and Other Groceries

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) blasted President Donald Trump’s lack of action to combat the rising costs of groceries during a full Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (OGR) hearing. In his exchange with the witness panel, Congressman Krishnamoorthi questioned why President Trump and his allies have yet to take action against the avian flu, as well as salmonella and listeria outbreaks, which are driving up the cost of household items. Since President Trump’s January 20th inauguration, the average price of a dozen eggs has increased by 14 percent to $7.53.
“My staff went back and checked the executive orders that have been issued by President Trump, and yet not a single one has mentioned the words ‘avian flu,’” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said during his question line. “I don’t see a single executive order to address high grocery prices or egg prices. This hearing is about ‘rightsizing’ the federal workforce; I think we should ‘rightsize’ the cost of eggs.”
Before his election in November, President Trump campaigned on taking action to lower the cost of everyday items for all Americans, saying, “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.” Yet, two weeks into his term, the president has not proposed any executive orders or legislation to help Illinoisans who are struggling to keep up with higher prices on essentials. Instead, President Trump has threatened to increase prices even further by imposing needless tariffs on two of America’s closest allies and partners in Canada and Mexico and has been more focused on purchasing Greenland and the Panama Canal rather than ensuring Illinoisans don’t have to choose between feeding themselves and their families and other basic needs.
