Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s Bill To Identify Strategic Intentions Of Russia, The KREMLIN Act, To Be Included In Legislative Package To Safeguard Our Democracy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Krishnamoorthi's Keeping Russian Entanglements Minimal and Limiting Intelligence Networks (KREMLIN) Act was included in Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer's Secure America from Russian Interference Act, an omnibus bill that lays out the steps necessary to secure America's elections, and counteract any interference from Russia and other foreign actors. Congressman Krishnamoorthi's KREMLIN Act would require the Director of National Intelligence to produce a National Intelligence Estimate on political intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin's campaign to destabilize western democracies and undermine NATO.
"We have seen, time and time again, that the Kremlin is determined to interfere in our democratic processes, something that they have done in many other countries around the globe. In the aftermath of the President refusing to stand up to President Putin at the Helsinki summit, it is all the more important that Congress takes strong, bipartisan action. This package of bills is part of a larger effort to protect our democracy and will meet the strategic need of identifying the ultimate goals of Putin's regime. I am proud to see the KREMLIN Act included as part of it. The 2016 election wasn't the last time that Russia will make an effort to sway the results of our democratic process, and this is an important step in protecting the sanctity of the ballot box and our national security."
