Congressman Krishnamoorthi Responds To NFL Fining Daniel Snyder $60 Million For Sexual Harassment And Misconduct In Response To His Congressional Investigation
WASHINGTON –Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi responded to the NFL's announcement that it would fine Daniel Snyder a record $60 million, by far the largest penalty ever levied against a team owner, after he was found, in a report commissioned by the league, to have sexually harassed Tiffani Johnston, a former cheerleader and marketing employee for the team. During his tenure last Congress as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Congressman Krishnamoorthi co-led the House Oversight Committee's years-long investigation into sexual harassment and workplace misconduct in the Washington Commanders organization under Daniel Snyder and held a public roundtable at which Johnston and other former employees of the team testified to the harassment they faced.
"I am heartened by the NFL's decision to finally hold Daniel Snyder accountable for the culture he created at the Washington Commanders organization by fining him for the sexual harassment and financial misconduct my investigation uncovered. Snyder's $60 million fine, along with the broader findings of the report issued by former federal prosecutor Mary Jo White, send a clear message of accountability, not simply across the NFL, but to any organization anywhere in the country where leaders feel above or beyond the law.
I was proud that my investigation brought light to these issues and provided a platform for Tiffani Johnston and other former employees of the Commanders who came forward, despite enormous personal risks. Their extraordinary courage in speaking out was fundamental to ending Daniel Snyder's culture of harassment, preventing other women from enduring what they did, and to providing an example to us all in combatting harassment and holding the powerful accountable."
On October 21, 2021, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, launched his investigation into workplace misconduct in the Washington Commanders organization and the National Football League with Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney. Over the course of the investigation, Congressional investigators reviewed millions of pages of documents, questioned dozens of witnesses, and held a briefing in which former Commanders employees shared their experiences of harassment in the organization. On February 3, 2022 Congressman Krishnamoorthi led a committee roundtable with former Washington Commanders employees, including Tiffani Johnston, in which they testified to the organization's widespread sexual harassment.
