Congressman Krishnamoorthi: “President Trump’s Failure to Stand Up To The Kremlin Has Given It Carte Blanche to Interfere In Our Upcoming Elections”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement in response to today's meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin:

"As expected, President Trump failed to confront President Putin on Russian government interference in our elections and placed more trust in the Russian dictator's denials than in the assessments of the American intelligence community. President Trump did not carry out his responsibility as a global leader, and he should have done much more than simply asking the question of whether interference occurred. President Trump's failure to stand up to the Kremlin has given it carte blanche to interfere in our upcoming elections, and that should frighten us all.

Given the President's lack of concern on this issue, it is now up to Congress to ensure that the November elections proceed without foreign interference. We need hearings, oversight, and legislation from our Speaker, not more excuses. This is why I introduced the Keeping Russian Entrapments Minimal and Limiting Intelligence Networks (KREMLIN) Act, which requires a National Intelligence Estimate of Russia's goals and methods in their campaign to destabilize western democracies. Just last week, Congressional Republicans blocked debate on this legislation, showing where their true priorities lie."
