Congressman Krishnamoorthi: President Trump Must Raise The Issue of Indicted Russian Military Hackers with Putin in Helsinki

July 13, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi released the following statement in response to Special Counsel Rod Rosenstein's announcement of 12 indictments for Russian hackers who stole data and documents from the Democratic National Committee, state boards of elections, secretaries of state, and many other key organizations who make up our democratic infrastructure:

"If anything, these indictments are a strong reminder to the American people that Russia did have a role in our 2016 presidential election - a direct assault on the integrity of our democracy. If President Trump does not raise this issue in his meeting with Vladimir Putin next week, or if he chooses to accept Putin's version of events over the findings of our own intelligence community, Congress must investigate the reasons behind this unprecedented behavior. President Trump was fully briefed on these indictments, and there is no excuse for any failure to defend the integrity of our elections. Defending our nation should not be a partisan issue, and the American people are ready for the President to publicly confront Putin."
