SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Oversight Committee today asked Steve Bannon, former White House Chief Strategist and Trump Campaign CEO, to provide more information on the Trump Tower meeting between Trump campaign officials and Kremlin-connected Russians which Mr. Bannon characterized as "treasonous." Dear Mr. Bannon:
On June 9, 2016, senior members of the Trump campaign including Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer and a former Soviet counterintelligence officer who had promised "official documents and information that would incriminate Hilary Clinton".
On January 3, 2018, it was widely reported that your response to this meeting was:
"The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor – with no lawyers... Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it's all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately."
Treason is not a charge to be leveled lightly, nor is it something that can be ignored once issued. Can you please respond to the following questions within one week:
- Why do you believe that the June 9 Trump Tower meeting was "treason"?
- When did you become aware of the June 9 meeting?
- Did any of the participants in the meeting inform then-candidate Donald Trump of the meeting or Russian offers of "official documents and information that would incriminate Hilary Clinton"?
- Would you be willing to meet with the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to further discuss these matters?
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Raja Krishnamoorthi
Member of Congress
