Congressman Krishnamoorthi Hosts Workforce Development Panel on “Expanding Apprenticeships in Illinois” at LSG Sky Chefs’ State of the Art Kitchen Facilities

May 7, 2018

SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi hosted a briefing on Friday on "Expanding Apprenticeships in Illinois and Investing in the American Workforce" in partnership with the Lufthansa Group, LSG Sky Chefs and the German American Chamber of Commerce. At this informative event with German Consul General Herbert Quelle, local business owners, students, apprentices, and educators convened to discuss methods that create and strengthen apprenticeship programs, as well as increase investments by employers towards worker training.

"I'm thrilled by the robust participation in today's event from community leaders representing local businesses, community colleges, and apprenticeship programs," said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. "With a skills gap of over 6 million unfilled jobs across the country, we need to be doing everything we can to prepare students and workers for good-paying, family-sustaining jobs here in Illinois. While I will continue to advocate for changes to federal policy, such as through reauthorizing the Perkins Career and Technical Education program, it is imperative that we facilitate collaboration between businesses, educators, and students at the local level to better prepare young Americans for jobs in the 21st century."

"WITTENSTEIN is a proud member of the ICATT Apprenticeship Program which has several companies in Congressman Krishnamoorthi's district," said Peter Riehle, President & CEO of WITTENSTEIN. "Focused exclusively on high-tech manufacturers and companies with complex technologies, the ICATT Apprenticeship Program closes the skills gap by helping companies develop a sustainable pipeline of highly-skilled talent. After today's discussion, I hope more companies in our area will take action to increase investments in workforce development."

"It was great to participate in an event that recognizes the importance of workforce development," said Rob Mower, General Manager, LSG Sky Chefs Chicago Region. "As a part of a Lufthansa Group Company, we at LSG Sky Chefs understand the importance of working with local, state and national governments, educational organizations, and other private enterprises to develop a workforce that will propel us into the future."

The briefing was held at the Lufthansa Group Company, LSG Sky Chefs kitchen facilities in Des Plaines, Illinois. LSG Sky Chefs has over 950 employees in the Chicago region who are responsible for producing 12,000 meals every day. LSG Sky Chefs services all major U.S. airlines and several international airlines, including but not limited to American, United, and Delta.
