Congressman Krishnamoorthi Hosts Congressional Briefing on the Impact of Waiting Periods With Harvard Business School Professor Deepak Malhotra

April 18, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi hosted a briefing yesterday exploring the impact of waiting periods on reducing gun violence. The briefing featured Professor Deepak Malhotra of Harvard Business School and a representative of the office of Congressman Mike Thompson, Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, to discuss current Congressional action on gun violence prevention. Professor Malhotra shared the compelling results of his recent Harvard Business School study which found that states with gun waiting periods have 17% fewer murders and 10% fewer suicides.

"Yesterday's event provided an important discussion on how we can, and must, take swift action to combat the gun violence epidemic that is plaguing our communities. By implementing a federal waiting period for handgun purchases, we could save over 900 lives a year in homicides alone," said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. "Professor Malhotra's research inspired me to introduce a bill to establish a national 3-day waiting period on hand gun purchases, an evidence-based policy solution to one of the great challenges facing our nation. I am hopeful that today's discussion will spark bipartisan interest in this common-sense initiative which will save lives."
