CHICAGO, IL – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) joined local elected officials and public health experts from Cook County, including Toni Preckwinkle, President of the Cook County Health Board of Commissioners, to hold a press conference on the topic of the fentanyl epidemic in Illinois. During the press conference, Congressman Krishnamoorthi, the Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), highlighted his Select Committee’s recent investigation into the CCP’s role in fueling the fentanyl crisis in America. Congressman Krishnamoorthi also announced the establishment of a Fentanyl Working Group through the Select Committee that will focus on addressing this crisis and ending the flow of fentanyl ingredients stemming from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The Select Committee’s report, which can be found here, revealed that the CCP has directly subsidized the export of precursors – the chemicals specifically used to make fentanyl – through tax breaks that encourage production of these chemicals. The report also showed that the CCP has not lived up to its promise to crack down on online drug networks that make it easy for Americans to access these drugs.

Video of the press conference can be found here.
