SCHAUMBURG, IL – On Tuesday, May 3rd, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi joined Safe Kids Worldwide President Torine Creppy and Safe Kids Illinois Representatives at Firman Community Services in Rolling Meadows, IL in an event promoting booster seat safety and the Congressman's legislation to strengthen federal standards through his Booster Seat Safety Act. Safe Kids Worldwide distributed booster seats to families at Firman Community Services as well as conducted child passenger safety (CPS) training, while Congressman Krishnamoorthi joined to discuss his Booster Seat Safety Act legislation. Congressman Krishnamoorthi introduced the Booster Seat Safety Act last year to implement clear standards for booster seat labeling and safety testing, following his investigation which revealed failures by the industry's bad actors. Safe Kids Worldwide is one of 20 endorsing organizations of the Booster Seat Safety Act.

"I was proud to participate in this booster seat giveaway with Safe Kids Worldwide at Firman Community Services in my district to help local families in need and discuss my Booster Seat Safety Act," Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. "The most important priority for any parent is the safety of their children, so these types of training events are so helpful in preventing unnecessary injuries. As a parent of three children, I want nothing more than the complete safety of every child in America. My legislation will make progress toward this goal by improving federal booster seat standards for millions of children across our nation."

Safe Kids Worldwide President Torine Creppy said, "We thank Representative Krishnamoorthi for his commitment to child passenger safety and for his leadership introducing the Booster Seat Safety Act. I'm proud to have joined him today along with Safe Kids Illinois, Lurie Children's Hospital and Firman Community Services, highlighting this important legislation as well as Safe Kids' work as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to ensure that families in need have access to life-saving child passenger safety resources."

The Booster Seat Safety Act does the following:

  • Labeling
    • Requires manufacturers to place clear labels on booster seats, car seats, and combination car seats. Booster seat labels shall note the recommendations for children to be over 4 years old and over 40 pounds.
    • Provides that NHTSA recommend the minimum height required for booster seats or a method by which a booster seat manufacture determines the minimum height required for booster seats. Subsequently, requires that minimum height recommendation be included in the booster seat label created by this bill.
  • Side-Impact Crash Testing
    • Requires NHTSA to issue regulations on side-impact crash testing for booster seats, including both near-side impact and far-side impact testing.
    • Requires NHTSA to provide guidelines for the creation of a 6-year-old testing dummy for the side-impact crash testing.
