Congressman Krishnamoorthi Denounces Supreme Court Decision On Texas Reproductive Rights Case, Calls For Enshrining Reproductive Health Rights In Law

September 2, 2021

WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's dark-of-night decision to leave SB8, the most restrictive abortion ban in half a century, in place:

"The Supreme Court's overnight decision on the Texas reproductive rights case was an attack on what Justice Sotomayor rightly called the court's ‘constitutional obligations to protect not only the rights of women, but also the sanctity of its precedents and of the rule of law.' The Texas law in question, SB8, is one of the most extreme attacks on the right to choose since it was first recognized by the Supreme Court nearly half a century ago. SB8 does not even provide exceptions for victims of rape and incest while creating a vigilante bounty system against anyone would dare to help a woman exercise her constitutionally-protected right to choose. While it is my deep hope that the Supreme Court will not follow this decision by overturning Roe v. Wade, hope is not enough, and that's why I'll be joining my colleagues in voting for the Women's Health Protection Act to enshrine the right to reproductive health care in law."
