Congressman Krishnamoorthi Condemns Anti-Asian Attack Against Indiana University Student, Calls For Nation To Reflect On The Work Left To Achieve Dr. King’s Dream On The Anniversary Of His Birth

January 16, 2023

SCHAUMBURG, IL — Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to last Wednesday's violent attack on an Indiana University student by a woman who told police she targeted the victim for "being Chinese," adding "it would be one less person to blow up our country":

"As we celebrate Dr. King's birthday and reflect on his legacy, we must also remember how much work we have left to achieve his dream. Last Wednesday's horrific attack on a young woman motivated by anti-Asian hate in Indiana is a disturbing reminder of the pervasive dangers of such bigotries and the need to counter them. As the COVID-19 pandemic itself fades, its impacts, including the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes we've seen since 2020 continues despite expanded community and law enforcement programs established to fight it. Despite how far our nation came toward greater equality and inclusion during Dr. King's brief lifetime, and how much farther we have come since, our nation still has far to go in ridding itself of the bigotries that have haunted us for so long. Americans of all backgrounds must come together and reject hatred in all its forms while standing shoulder to shoulder to expand the circle of inclusion."
