Congressman Krishnamoorthi Co-Leads Bipartisan Call to Ban Congressional Stock Trading to Speaker Johnson and House Leadership

January 19, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi joined with 26 other bipartisan members in calling on Speaker Mike Johnson and House leadership to bring legislation banning congressional stock trading to a vote on the House floor. Congressman Krishnamoorthi, author of the bipartisan Ending Trading and Holdings in Congressional Stocks (ETHICS) Act, has been a vocal leader in the effort to prohibit Members of Congress from being allowed to own, trade, buy, and sell stocks. Banning Members of Congress from stock trading would help ensure public servants are putting the needs of their constituents above their own portfolios and help restore faith and trust at all levels of government.

In the letter to Speaker Johnson, the bipartisan coalition laid out seven “first principles” they agreed to – from specific prohibitions to enforcement mechanisms.

“There is no shortage of bipartisan legislation ready to be voted on that model this established set of shared principles. We know that the overwhelming majority of Americans believe that Members of congress should not be allowed to trade stock while in office. We respectfully urge you to ensure elected officials are held to the highest standard,” the bipartisan group of Members wrote.

Reps. Angie Craig (MN-02), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Joe Neguse (CO-02), Katie Porter (CA-47) and Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) also co-led the letter with Congressman Krishnamoorthi. Reps. Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05), Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chris Deluzio (PA-17), Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-AL), Daniel Kildee (MI-08), Derek Kilmer (WA-06), Barbara Lee (CA-12), Mike Levin (CA-49), Seth Magaziner (RI-02), Betty McCollum (MN-04), Jerrold Nadler (NY-12), Wiley Nickel (NC-13), Dean Phillips (MN-03), Matthew Rosendale (MT-02), Andrea Salinas (OR-06), Elissa Slotkin (MI-07), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Paul Tonko (NY-20) and Susan Wild (PA-07) also signed onto the letter.
