Congressman Krishnamoorthi: Chairman Gowdy Is Wrong in Refusing To Meet With Whistleblower On Flynn Plan To Build Russian Nuclear Reactors In The Middle East

December 7, 2017

Washington, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to Oversight Committee Chairman Gowdy's refusal to meet with a whistleblower who came forward with information on former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's purported use of his former position to help launch Russian nuclear deal in the Middle East:

"Chairman Gowdy's curt refusal to Ranking Member Cummings' request is a sad chapter for the Oversight Committee. Our charge is to, at ‘any time' investigate ‘any matter' and we have primary jurisdiction over whistleblower protections. Meeting with a whistleblower with knowledge of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's attempts to lift sanctions to help launch a Russian nuclear venture in the Middle East is within our committee's purview and its responsibility. By refusing to meet with a whistleblower, the Chairman is neglecting a vital duty to the American people.

Special Counsel Mueller has removed any impediment to the Committee proceeding with its investigation, and failing to move forward will only have a chilling effect on future whistleblowers. The Committee website even has a page (oversight.house.gov/whistle) that allows people to alert Chairman Gowdy to fraud and abuse in your agency or other organization.' Given the Chairman's actions, I wonder how many whistleblowers will hesitate to come forward in the future."
