Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls On Trump Administration Coronavirus Task Force To Address Care For The Uninsured And Underinsured In Response Plans

February 27, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL-08) released the following statement strongly urging the Administration's Coronavirus Task Force to immediately issue a concrete plan to cover and protect uninsured and underinsured Americans from the coronavirus in the United States:

"As we battle the spread of this public health threat, I am gravely concerned about the nearly 14% of Americans who do not have health insurance, and the millions more who are underinsured and may not be covered by coronavirus-related treatments. To protect all Americans, we must do everything we can to encourage families to seek out necessary care for any coronavirus-related symptoms.

As Vice President Mike Pence and the Trump Administration's Coronavirus Task Force set out to assess the nation's emergency preparedness in combating this possible pandemic, my office is strongly urging the task force to preemptively cover and protect uninsured and underinsured Americans and our economy and to work with Congress in this effort.

In addition to exacerbating this public health crisis, the possibility of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of unpaid medical bills could pose an incredible danger to the overall economy, with the brunt of the financial burden being felt by working families. I urge the Administration to detail how we plan to both encourage uninsured and underinsured Americans to seek care, as well as pay for lifesaving services."
