Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls on President Trump to Tackle Surging Grocery Costs as Egg Prices Surge 14% in 17 Days Since Inauguration
In his letter, Congressman Krishnamoorthi urges President Trump to address factors driving price increases
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) wrote a letter to the Administration urging President Donald Trump to take immediate action to address rising grocery costs in Illinois. In the letter to the White House, Congressman Krishnamoorthi urged the president to act in response to the spread of avian flu and food recalls related to E. coli, listeria, and salmonella, all key factors driving up egg prices nationwide and hurting Illinois families and small businesses. Despite his campaign promise to “immediately bring prices down, starting on day one,” in the two weeks since President Trump took office, the price of a dozen eggs has risen by 14 percent, almost a full dollar, and the president has not acted to address the root cause of this dramatic increase.
“This is not simply a failed campaign promise, it is a true crisis for everyday Americans whose dollars will no longer stretch as far,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in the letter. “Food safety concerns are only growing, and it is time to not only restore trust in our food system, but also to immediately address the food affordability crisis.”
On Wednesday, Congressman Krishnamoorthi highlighted President Trump’s failure to reduce the price of eggs during a hearing of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The full video of the congressman’s question line can be found here.
