Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls For New Sanctions On Assad Regime As Reports Emerge Of Its Execution Of Layla Shweikani, A 26-Year-Old Humanitarian Aid Worker From Chicago

December 19, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Krishnamoorthi released the following statement regarding the Assad regime's reported execution of Layla Shweikani, a 26-year-old Chicago-native providing humanitarian relief to Syrian civilians who died in the regime's custody on December 28, 2016:

"I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of Layla Shweikani as it confronts these new details of her death at the hands of Bashar al Assad's regime. Ms. Shweikani was a dedicated humanitarian who followed that commitment into some of the most dangerous places in the world and lost her life amid the war crimes committed by Assad's regime that is backed by Russia and Iran. It is imperative that the United States responds to Ms. Shweikani's death, and those of so many other innocent victims, by imposing new sanctions on Assad and his supporters. The House has already passed the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act to implement this policy, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly take up this legislation and pass it."
