September 17, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to emerging reports regarding forced, unnecessary medical procedures—including hysterectomies— performed on at least 17 immigrant women in Irwin County, Ga.:

"The allegations that women held at the Irwin County Detention Center were forced to undergo unnecessary, nonconsensual medical procedures, including hysterectomies, are beyond disturbing and demand immediate action," said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. "The Department of Homeland Security Inspector General must immediately investigate these horrifying claims before any more women have their reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, and basic rights stripped away. These horrors must be fully investigated, all those responsible must be brought to justice, and every measure must be taken to ensure these abuses do not happen again."
