Congressman Krishnamoorthi Calls For Stability and Peace in Sri Lanka
WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today issued the following statement regarding the Sri Lankan Parliament voting in favor of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as President.
"Following the Sri Lankan Parliament's election of Ranil Wickremesinghe as President, it is time for the people and government of Sri Lanka to unite and restore stability in the country and address the serious economic challenges facing it."
"In addition, the government must restore calm through peaceful means. I am very concerned by reports about violent actions taken by the government against protesters at Galle Face overnight, and strongly urge the authorities to refrain from the use of force against them. Immediate access to medical attention should be provided to those who seek it."
"The new President must work with all parts of Sri Lankan society, including all religious and ethnic minorities, to address persistent concerns about the economic, social, and human rights of all its citizens."
"I strongly support the Sri Lankan people's right to peacefully protest. Their concerns must be addressed, and the time do so is now.
