Krishnamoorthi Confronts Iowa Governor on DOGE Government Payments Takeover as She Refuses to Reject Musk’s Claim that the Lutheran Family Services is a “Money Laundering Organization”

February 5, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) challenged Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) on the actions of “special government employee” Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE), including their seizing control of $6 trillion in payments from the Treasury Department. During his question line, Congressman Krishnamoorthi pointed out the hypocrisy of Gov. Reynolds praising Musk and DOGE for accessing trillions of dollars in taxpayer money and the personal information of federal employees while readily denying such access to firms hired to assist in modernizing Iowa’s state government.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also questioned Gov. Reynolds about Elon Musk’s recent quote tweet of disgraced retired General Michael Flynn in which Flynn likened Lutheran Family Services to a “money-laundering operation.” Despite being repeatedly asked by Congressman Krishnamoorthi if she agrees with the offensive assertion, Gov. Reynolds refused to give a straight answer, even when asked directly if she believed the Lutheran Church itself was a money-laundering operation. The governor’s unwillingness to call out an offensive and baseless conspiracy theory reaffirmed the lengths to which many extreme Republican leaders continue to go to avoid the wrath of Elon Musk and President Trump.
