Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Responds To Increased Illinois Census Population Count In Response To Successful State Review Request

January 4, 2024

Review determines 2020 Census omitted more than 46,000 residents in group homes, residence halls

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Today, Illinois released a new report that shows the U.S. Census Bureau missed 46,400 Illinois residents during the 2020 Census. The official Post-Census Group Quarters Review, set up in conjunction with the Census Bureau, the state of Illinois, and research organization NORC at the University of Chicago, found that 733 group quarters were undercounted or missed completely during the 2020 Census. This error by the Census Bureau could have contributed to Illinois’s overall reported population loss following the release of the 2020 Census, which impacted representation and funding figures, including a reduction in Illinois’s total number of seats in Congress and wrongly reduced federal funding for state and local programs.

“For the last two years, I have partnered with the Governor in calling for a fair census count to guarantee our state and our citizens receive the requisite federal funding we deserve,” Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said. “The updated Census data show that Illinois’ population grew to a record high last decade, but we know we need to continue to do everything we can to attract more businesses and people to Illinois. I will continue to work with Governor Pritzker and the other leaders of our state to work on that mission and to help Illinoisans achieve their full social and economic potential.”
